EASO is recruiting
The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) newsletter usually informs its readers about the vacancies in the Agency, but it’s now been a while since the last edition (July/August).
We therefore thought it would be a good idea to keep you abreast of the current vacancies (and respective deadlines):
- Asylum Processes Officer (8th October);
- Logistics Assistant/Driver (14th October).
Interview with Dr. Robert Visser: EU, Malta, “pushbacks”
“My whole organisation is an instrument of solidarity”, said Dr. Robert Visser in an interview that can be watched in timesofmalta.com (8 September 2013).
Asked about the reception system and conditions in some European Union Member States, the EASO Executive Director responded that his assessment is that Member States have raised their level of preparedness to receive asylum seekers.
Concerning the particular pressure faced by Malta’s asylum system and the solidarity between Member States, he stated that “Malta has succeeded to start the discussion about relocation and to have a project (EUREMA) in place”.
He further mentioned that “pushbacks”, “without any guarantee, without any eye for the humanitarian situation” cannot be an option to consider.
Speaking of “pushbacks”, we will take this opportunity to recommend the reading of two news articles on “pushback” policies. ‘Immigration: The Last Time Malta Tried a Pushback’ (in sundaycircle.com) and ‘MaltaToday survey: Over 20% think asylum seekers ‘invading’ Malta’ (MaltaToday, 11 August 2013).
ECRE’s feedback on the Annual Report & AIDA project
As you know, the open consultation period to provide feedback on the European Asylum Support Office Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the European Union (Annual Report) has recently come to an end (check our earlier post on the period for consultation). Earlier this month, we have shared our feedback with you (in this post).
You can now read as well the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) feedback, in the ‘Latest News’ section of their website.
We really recommend the reading of ECRE’s comments - click here to access the summary displayed on their website and the full document.
In the same page of ECRE’s website, you will also find reference to aditus feedback. Thanks ECRE!
In addition to these documents, the same page of ECRE’s website refers, too, to a report on the asylum package implementation, ‘Not there yet: An NGO Perspective on Challenges to a Fair and Effective Common European Asylum System’. Due to the title of the Report, it is only natural that EASO is mentioned there, which actually happens many times along the text. We deeply recommend the reading of this report, part of the project Asylum Information Database.
Concerning this Report, you can also read this article, by Katie Nguyen, published in the Thomson Reuters Foundation website on Friday 6 September.
