EASO Annual Reports, MEP Roberta Metsola meets Dr Visser, ECRE 2013 Annual General Conference, Associate Countries

We have several important updates concerning the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) to bring to your attention. Here they are (starting with the most recent ones):

Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the EU

A recent Press Release (PR 07/2013, of 8 July) informed us that EASO’s ‘Annual Report on the situation of Asylum in the EU 2012’ has been released.

We haven’t yet had the time to read through it, but we wanted to make sure you’re informed of its publication. If you have already read it, feel free to leave us your comments.

MEP Roberta Metsola held a meeting with Dr Robert K. Visser

EASO Press Release 06/2013 of 5 July informed that Roberta Metsola, one of the Malta’s elected Members of the European Parliament (MEP), has visited EASO and held a meeting with its Executive Director.

They discussed the Common European Asylum System (in particular, the new legislative instruments), the fact finding report on intra EU relocation from Malta (EUREMA) and how to strengthen the ties between the European Parliament (EP) and EASO (stressing the importance of the contributions made by the EP’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs).

You can also have a look at
Roberta Metsola website, for more details on her position concerning the CEAS and EASO activities.

ECRE 2013 Annual General Conference

If you’re a member of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), you can now register (
here) for the Annual General Conference, which will include keynote speeches by Wolfgang Taucher (Chairman of the EASO Management Board) and Vincent Cochetel (Director of the UNHCR Bureau for Europe).

The Conference will take place in Prague, from 9 to 11 October.

For more information, read the ECRE
‘Weekly Bulletin’ of 5 July 2013.

Working Arrangements with Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland

EASO welcomes that (...), Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland initialled working arrangements for their participation in the work of EASO” – was mentioned in EASO
Press release 05/2013 of 28 June.

The press release further informed that these countries will be allowed to participate in EASO’s work and to receive support actions from EASO; they will be represented in the Management Board as observers and nationals of these countries may be engaged under contract by EASO.

See the press release for more details on the steps still to be followed before the texts of the agreements are published in the Official Journal.

Annual Activity Report and Final accounts 2012

Have you already had a look at EASO’s ‘Annual Activity Report 2012’?

The Report was published in mid-June and you can find its two parts in EASO’s website,
'EASO Publications’ page.

This report underlines EASO’s activities throughout the year, differently from the most recently published ‘Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the EU’ (mentioned above) which presents the Situation of Asylum in the EU (see articles 12, 29 (c) and (d) of the
Regulation establishing a European Asylum Support Office, as well as section 1.4.4. in page 17 of the ‘Annual Activity Report’).

EASO ‘Final Annual Accounts’ are also accessible. Click
here to read the document and the Opinion of the Management Board.
