EASO and EFTA...where do things stand?

To follow up on Switzerland’s role in relation to the European Asylum Support Office posted here inJuly last year, we should give you another update on the relations between EASO and Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

It was decided on the Council meeting 27 January 2012 on General Affairs that the European Commission now has the authorisation to open negotiations with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein on arrangements concerning their participation with EASO and its activities .

We sent a query to EASO to learn whether these negotiations have actually commenced and what the real prospects are looking like.  EASO promptly replied (thanks!) saying that for the the being the European Commission has invited the mentioned countries to open formal negotiations and that EASO will participate in these negotiations as an observer.

We’ll keep you updated on these negotiations.
