ECRE & the Inaugural Consultative Forum meeting

Yesterday's ECRE Weekly Bulletin contained a short bit of information on the Inaugural Consultative Forum meeting:

"The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) held its first Consultative Forum meeting with civil society organisations active in the field of asylum and UNHCR on 15 December 2011.

ECRE attended the Consultative Forum and Allan Leas, ECRE's Acting Secretary General, gave a speech during the opening session. Allan emphasized that, "NGOs have a wealth of experience and expertise to offer EASO." He affirmed that, "ECRE sees this first meeting of the Consultative Forum as the start of what we hope to be a meaningful and constructive dialogue between NGOs and EASO with the aim of building together a Common European Asylum System that can serve as a model for the rest of the world". Allan also chaired the workshop on how to ensure reliable and accurate Country of Origin Information during asylum procedures.

The recently established EU agency was established to strengthen Member States’ practical cooperation on asylum, enhance the implementation of the Common European Asylum System, and support countries whose asylum and reception systems are under particular pressure. According to the Regulation governing the EASO, the Consultative forum meetings, should be held at least once every year in order to ensure a close dialogue between EASO and relevant stakeholders."

We'll try to obtain and post ECRE's comments on the meeting.
