EASO & the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention

EU Home Affairs Commission Cecilia Malmstrom and Antonio Gueterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, published a joint article on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Published in news sites and news papers all over the EU, and probably also beyond, the article is entitled "Europe must uphold its values" and is essentially a call for the EU to do more to offer international protection to persons in need of it.CEAS obviously features quite strongly throughout the article, as the EU's key effort in offering such international protection. Malmstrom and Gueterres highlight the need for CEAS to offer a truly coherent level of protection to persons fleeing their homes, and it is in this context that EASO is referred to:

"A system that treats asylum claims so disparately is far from complete. The 60th anniversary of the Refugee Convention, we hope, will give impetus to the establishment of a true common European asylum system. The new European Asylum Support Office, inaugurated in Malta last month, is expected to contribute meaningfully in this regard, both between EU countries and between the Union and countries outside the EU."
