"...the office has no staff!"...ECRE interviews Christopher Hein

ECRE today published an interview with Christopher Hein, the Director of the Italian Refugee Council (CIR), the focus being the current situation on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

In the interview Hein makes a number of very valid statements, also in an attempt to contextualise the current Lampedusa scenario in a broader asylum perspective. Hein sternly warns of the dangers of a Frontex intervention, raising the alarm bells associated with indiscriminate returns and pushbacks.

Commenting on Commissioner Malmström’s recent comments that she appealed to Frontex and EASO to report on the Lampedusa situation, and reiterating statements I made in my earlier related posts, Hein succinctly summarises all our concerns and queries with the Commissioner’s comments, essentially that “ present, the office has no staff!”
