In an interview given to Europost on 5th February, Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström gave some interesting comments on her vision for CEAS, EASO and other asylum/migration matters.
On EASO, the Commissioner said that:
“The core mandate of the European Asylum Office, which will be located in Malta and which is expected to be operational for the summer of 2011, is to contribute to the implementation of the Common European Asylum System, support practical co-operation within the EU and to support those Member States that experience a particular pressure on their asylum systems. So the EASO is a very concrete means to support Member States in their efforts to efficiently handle asylum issues and asylum seekers. By doing so, the EASO will enhance solidarity among Member States, and help them fulfilling their European and international obligations in this field. It will play a crucial role as a centre of expertise on Member States' asylum systems. It will be able to contribute to better implementation of the asylum legislation by the Member States and the sharing of best practices.”
Nothing we didn’t know already.
