Malta will also support Hungary on the creation of a Common European Asylum System, Borg said. “This should take due account of the situation on the ground in the different Member States, in particular the fact that some are carrying different degrees of asylum responsibility.”
Borg reminded that Malta has shown its commitment in this field through its successful candidature to host the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), expected to be up and running by the middle of this year.
“In spite of the fact that there has been a significant drop in arrivals of irregular migrants, Malta is still hosting a large number of migrants disproportionate to its small size,” Borg said. “We expect the Hungarian Presidency to always maintain the situation of migratory flows in the Mediterranean on its agenda.”
